Subject: Spring-Ford Tournament

Don,

Please pass on my thanks to your crew of umpires who did another bang up job
for us this weekend.  You have a great team of umpires who really are a big
part of the success of our tournaments.  Without there extra efforts this
would be just another tournament.

We look forward to working with you and your organization again next season.

Hello Jeff and Keith ,

I wanted to take a minute to send you guys a positive email for a change . I realize that with the position you two are in , that you must get your share of complaints during the softball season . As a matter of fact , I email you earlier this year Jeff about what I thought was a brutal schedule that my U 16's received at one of the NSA Tournaments . Well , today I am emailing you both to let you know that we at Chaos are very pleased with the level of umpiring that we have come across so far this year . Now I understand that nobody is perfect and umps do make bad calls just like coaches and players error during the game! What I am referring to is the consistency of the umps and their attitudes more than anything . All 5 of my Chaos teams have done a lot of NSA tournaments to date this year and we have found that the Umps , good or bad , are very approachable and professional about their jobs . It means so much to a coach that he or she can ask questions and correspond to an umpire during a tournament . Unfortunately , we have not had good experiences with the NSA umps in DE/Maryland , but we are grateful for the job the NSA of Eastern Pa have done to date and we thank you two for your part in that!

Please mass email this to your umps and let them know how we feel . I am sure they get kicked in the butt more than patted on the back!

Your friend in Softball ,

  •  "During tournament play I expect the umpires to umpire - not coach.  If it's an
illegal pitch, call it and then explain the problem.  Don't give warnings.  If a girl is
leaving early call it - don't warn them."

Batter's Box Stuff

The lines are considered part of the batter's box.
In order to be out of the box the batter would have
to have one foot touching the ground
completely outside the batter's box as in E.
In A, B, C & D the batter could legally hit the pitch
because he would be considered in the batter's box.
If the batter hit the ball while in E, he would be called
out for being out of the batter's box.
Prior to the pitch, the batter must have both feet
completely within the lines of the batter's box. He can
touch the lines but no part of his foot can be outside
the lines. Therefore, prior to the pitcher releasing the
ball, the batter would be legal in C & D but illegal in
A, B & E. The umpire should call time and require that
the batter assume a proper & legal stance within the box.
Of course, once the pitcher pitches, A, B, C & D all
become legal.
